Crude Soybean Oil Price in South Africa (FOB) - 2023
The average crude soybean oil export price stood at $1,312 per ton in July 2023, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price showed a pronounced slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in November 2022 an increase of 8.6% m-o-m. The export price peaked at $1,739 per ton in July 2022; however, from August 2022 to July 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major export markets. In July 2023, the highest price was recorded for prices to Zambia ($1,464 per ton) and Swaziland ($1,423 per ton), while the average price for exports to Mozambique ($1,290 per ton) and Zimbabwe ($1,311 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Zambia (-1.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

In 2022, the average crude soybean oil import price amounted to $1,759 per ton, jumping by 50% against the previous year. In general, the import price enjoyed noticeable growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 57% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 37%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.
In value terms, crude soybean oil exports soared to $102M in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 98% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

After two years of decline, purchases abroad of crude soybean oil increased by 1.5% to 17K tons in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a deep setback.
In value terms, crude soybean oil imports skyrocketed to $30M in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +14.1% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +56.8% against 2020 indices.
