Copper Price in Italy (FOB) - 2022

The average copper export price stood at $8,957 per ton in 2022, with an increase of 4.6% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, copper export price increased by +48.5% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 39%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to Poland ($9,644 per ton) and Germany ($9,359 per ton), while the average price for exports to China ($8,551 per ton) and Serbia ($9,183 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Korea (+22.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Copper Price in Italy (CIF) - 2022

The average copper import price stood at $9,615 per ton in 2022, with an increase of 73% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed modest growth. The import price peaked at $10,895 per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($14,409 per ton), while the price for Slovenia ($5,898 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Slovenia (+16.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Copper Exports in Italy

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of copper, when their volume decreased by -41.3% to 10K tons. Overall, total exports indicated a modest expansion from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 33%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 18K tons, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, copper exports fell sharply to $93M in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 86% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $152M, and then fell rapidly in the following year.

Copper Imports in Italy

In 2022, approx. 950 tons of copper were imported into Italy; picking up by 276% on 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports saw a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 549% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, copper imports soared to $9.1M in 2022. In general, imports showed a significant increase. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
