The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the production volume increased by 5.1% against the previous year. Global production peaked at $2.2B in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were China (46M square meters), the United States (37M square meters) and Turkey (32M square meters), with a combined 43% share of global production. Germany, South Korea, India, Italy, Vietnam, Pakistan, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, the UK and Bangladesh lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 32%.

Imports
World Imports of Composition Leather
In 2022, purchases abroad of composition leather decreased by -0.4% to 98M square meters, falling for the third consecutive year after eight years of growth. Overall, total imports indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -44.5% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 41% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 176M square meters. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of global imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, composition leather imports reached $358M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global imports attained the peak figure at $397M in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports By Country
Cambodia represented the main importing country with an import of about 30M square meters, which accounted for 31% of total imports. The Dominican Republic (11M square meters) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by the Philippines (6%). India (4.2M square meters), Italy (3.7M square meters), Nigeria (3.6M square meters), China (3.4M square meters), Turkey (3.3M square meters), Russia (2.4M square meters), Madagascar (2.2M square meters), the UK (2.1M square meters) and Vietnam (1.8M square meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into Cambodia increased at an average annual rate of +14.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Madagascar (+46.5%), the UK (+22.5%), the Philippines (+17.2%), India (+15.6%), the Dominican Republic (+8.1%), Turkey (+7.1%) and Russia (+5.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Madagascar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +46.5% from 2012-2022. Nigeria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, China (-7.0%), Vietnam (-7.0%) and Italy (-7.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Cambodia (+22 p.p.), the Dominican Republic (+5 p.p.), the Philippines (+4.5 p.p.), India (+3.1 p.p.), Madagascar (+2.2 p.p.) and the UK (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global imports from 2012-2022, the share of Vietnam (-2.7 p.p.), China (-4.9 p.p.) and Italy (-6.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Cambodia ($174M) constitutes the largest market for imported composition leather worldwide, comprising 49% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Dominican Republic ($21M), with a 5.7% share of global imports. It was followed by China, with a 4.8% share.
In Cambodia, composition leather imports expanded at an average annual rate of +17.2% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Dominican Republic (+4.3% per year) and China (+1.3% per year).
Import Prices By Country
In 2022, the average composition leather import price amounted to $3.7 per square meter, almost unchanged from the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, composition leather import price increased by +64.6% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 64% against the previous year. Global import price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

The average composition leather export price stood at $3 per square meter in 2022, declining by -5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period.
