Chestnut Price in Italy (FOB) - 2023
In October 2023, the average chestnut export price amounted to $6,511 per ton, reducing by -7% against the previous month. In general, the export price, however, enjoyed a moderate expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in February 2023 when the average export price increased by 45% against the previous month. The export price peaked at $9,786 per ton in August 2023; however, from September 2023 to October 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major export markets. In October 2023, the highest price was recorded for prices to Canada ($6,953 per ton) and Switzerland ($6,798 per ton), while the average price for exports to the UK ($4,995 per ton) and the United States ($6,281 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From October 2022 to October 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Spain (+7.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Chestnut Price in Italy (CIF) - 2023
In October 2023, the average chestnut import price amounted to $1,969 per ton, which is down by -48.7% against the previous month. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in April 2023 an increase of 128% against the previous month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $4,975 per ton. From May 2023 to October 2023, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In October 2023, the country with the highest price was Georgia ($2,781 per ton), while the price for North Macedonia ($1,589 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From October 2022 to October 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Albania (+5.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Chestnut Exports in Italy
In 2022, approx. 12K tons of chestnuts were exported from Italy; increasing by 4.4% on the previous year's figure. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 16% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 14K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, chestnut exports contracted to $59M in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 17%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $68M. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Chestnut Imports in Italy
For the third consecutive year, Italy recorded decline in purchases abroad of chestnuts, which decreased by -13.3% to 18K tons in 2022. In general, imports recorded a dramatic decrease.
In value terms, chestnut imports contracted significantly to $50M in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a sharp decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 2% against the previous year.
