The United States (554K tons) ranked third in terms of total consumption with a 2.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Italy stood at +22.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: China (+5.4% per year) and the United States (+4.1% per year).

In value terms, Italy ($14.3B) led the market, alone. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($5B). It was followed by the United States.

The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the production volume increased by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global production hit record highs at $29.8B in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Production By Country

Italy (15M tons) remains the largest base metal closure producing country worldwide, accounting for 74% of total volume. The average base metal closure import price stood at $5,591 per ton in 2022, growing by 14% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($7,910 per ton), while Belgium ($2,525 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
