Banana and Plantain Price in Portugal (CIF) - 2023
In August 2023, the average banana and plantain import price amounted to $837 per ton, growing by 1.8% against the previous month. Over the last twelve months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.6%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in November 2022 when the average import price increased by 6.9% m-o-m. The import price peaked at $873 per ton in April 2023; however, from May 2023 to August 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2023, the highest price was recorded for prices from Spain ($913 per ton) and Angola ($860 per ton), while the price for Ecuador ($628 per ton) and Guatemala ($648 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Angola (+4.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Banana and Plantain Price in Portugal (FOB) - 2023
The average banana and plantain export price stood at $992 per ton in August 2023, growing by 1.8% against the previous month. Overall, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in February 2023 an increase of 7.7% m-o-m. The export price peaked at $1,084 per ton in April 2023; however, from May 2023 to August 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was Spain ($985 per ton), while the average price for exports to Slovakia stood at $733 per ton.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Spain (+0.8%).
Banana and Plantain Imports in Portugal
In 2022, supplies from abroad of bananas and plantains decreased by less than 0.1% to 224K tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 243K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, banana and plantain imports totaled $160M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $163M. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Banana and Plantain Exports in Portugal
For the fourth consecutive year, Portugal recorded growth in shipments abroad of bananas and plantains, which increased by 13% to 40K tons in 2022. In general, total exports indicated a resilient expansion from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +15.9% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +55.8% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 27%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, banana and plantain exports skyrocketed to $35M in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated a significant expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +22.6% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +84.2% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 37% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
