In value terms, Russia ($1.4B) led the market, alone. The second position in the ranking was taken by Brazil ($413M). It was followed by the United States.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Russia amounted to +1.9%. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual rates of market growth: Brazil (-6.0% per year) and the United States (-0.2% per year).

In 2022, the highest levels of balloon and dirigible per capita consumption was registered in Brunei Darussalam (77 units per 1000 persons), followed by Botswana (21 units per 1000 persons), Ireland (5.9 units per 1000 persons) and Greece (3.2 units per 1000 persons), while the world average per capita consumption of balloon and dirigible was estimated at 0.2 units per 1000 persons.

Production

In 2022, the amount of balloons, dirigibles and other non-powered aircraft produced worldwide fell slightly to 718K units, dropping by -4.2% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, production recorded a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 20%. Over the period under review, global production hit record highs at 1.6M units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, balloon and dirigible production totaled $3.1B in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production continues to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the production volume increased by 37% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $9.7B. From 2015 to 2022, global production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Production By Country

China (212K units) constituted the country with the largest volume of balloon and dirigible production, accounting for 29% of total volume. Moreover, balloon and dirigible production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Thailand (59K units), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by India (46K units), with a 6.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in China totaled -6.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Thailand (-4.1% per year) and India (-5.3% per year).

Imports

In 2022, global imports of balloons, dirigibles and other non-powered aircraft was estimated at 654K units, almost unchanged from the previous year. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 212% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 1.9M units. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of global imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, balloon and dirigible imports declined significantly to $54M in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

Exports from China increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Turkey (+46.5%), South Africa (+23.6%), India (+18.8%), Vietnam (+15.3%) and the UK (+14.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkey emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +46.5% from 2012-2022. Finland experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Australia (-1.8%) and Thailand (-15.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of China, India, Turkey, Vietnam and the UK increased by +11, +4.8, +3.8, +2.2 and +1.9 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the UK ($6.2M), South Africa ($3.7M) and Vietnam ($3.4M) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 18% share of global exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Vietnam, with a CAGR of +11.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices By Country

In 2022, the average balloon and dirigible export price amounted to $414 per unit, dropping by -41.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 71% against the previous year. The global export price peaked at $734 per unit in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
