Exports from Sri Lanka

In 2021, after nine years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of semi-chemical fluting, when their volume decreased by -54.5% to X tons. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 177% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then fell sharply in the following year.

In value terms, semi-chemical fluting exports shrank notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 151%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.

Exports by Country

Bangladesh (X tons) was the main destination for semi-chemical fluting exports from Sri Lanka, accounting for a 54% share of total exports. Moreover, semi-chemical fluting exports to Bangladesh exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Hong Kong SAR (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Singapore (X tons), with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Bangladesh amounted to +110.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hong Kong SAR (+54.8% per year) and Singapore (+37.8% per year).

In value terms, Bangladesh ($X) remains the key foreign market for semi-chemical fluting exports from Sri Lanka, comprising 61% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Nigeria ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Hong Kong SAR, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Bangladesh amounted to +126.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Nigeria (+9.6% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (+41.8% per year).

The average semi-chemical fluting export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 80% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Nigeria (+31.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Sri Lanka

In 2021, approx. X tons of semi-chemical fluting were imported into Sri Lanka; approximately reflecting the previous year. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 112%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, semi-chemical fluting imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 75% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

India (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) were the main suppliers of semi-chemical fluting imports to Sri Lanka, together accounting for 54% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by India (with a CAGR of +37.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), India ($X) and Saudi Arabia ($X) appeared to be the largest semi-chemical fluting suppliers to Sri Lanka, together comprising 56% of total imports.

In terms of the main suppliers, India, with a CAGR of +38.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average semi-chemical fluting import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 48% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per ton), while the price for Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+8.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
