Vanilla Exports

Exports in SADC

In 2022, approx. X tons of vanilla were exported in SADC; falling by X% on the previous year's figure. Overall, exports showed a noticeable curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, vanilla exports shrank to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of X%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Madagascar dominates exports structure, recording X tons, which was near X% of total exports in 2022. South Africa (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Madagascar decreased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mauritius (X%) and South Africa (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. While the share of South Africa (X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Madagascar (X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, vanilla imports expanded sharply to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by X%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Mauritius (X tons) was the largest importer of vanilla, generating X% of total imports. Madagascar (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Seychelles (X tons), Tanzania (X tons) and South Africa (X tons). All these countries together held near X% share of total imports. The following importers - Zambia (X tons) and Angola (X tons) - each recorded a X% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to vanilla imports into Mauritius stood at X%. At the same time, Zambia (X%), Tanzania (X%) and Seychelles (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. Madagascar experienced a relatively flat trend pattern.
